David Vaughn

As a Lead Security Researcher, David is a highly respected senior strategist with a proven track record of effectively understanding and communicating contextual business requirements to both technical and non-technical leadership. David’s business acumen, broad implementation experience, and ability to deliver complex transformative programs, helps his team secure customers’ data while achieving compliance with current regulatory requirements; while anticipating the impact emerging technologies will have not just on the payment security systems ecosystem, but future business as well. Prior to joining Mastercard, he was a Corporate Information Security Officer with Branch Banking & Trust (BB&T) where he worked within Payment System Security. David served as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for Cyber Defense Technologies prior to his role at BB&T, where his primary focus was the US Public Sector services portfolio. 

As both a father and a security professional, David is passionate about social causes at the intersection of next generation of InfoSec and technology. He has presented and dedicated time to non-profit organizations promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). David has regularly volunteered or participated in conferences like Blackhat, DefCon, DerbyCon, ShmooCon, BSidesLV, InfoSecon and significantly contributed to founding BSides Raleigh in 2013. 

David is currently serving his second elected term as International Director on the Board of Directors for Information Systems Security Association International (ISSA) as the Chairperson of Professional Development and Education. He is deeply passionate about implementing programs for fellow professionals to grow and expand their careers, as well as creating avenues for new professionals to gain a foothold in the information security industry. He has served in various roles with the Armed Forces Communication Electronics Association (AFCEA), High Technology Crime Investigators Association (HTCIA), Infragard Raleigh, ISC2 Raleigh Chapter, and the Raleigh ISSA Chapter. He is an active member on the FS-ISAC Payment Risk Council as well as the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators (IAFCI). In 2019 as a means of furthering his work for the local community he became an elected public official to serve the Town of Wake Forest Technology Advisory Board.  David holds numerous industry certifications some of which include: Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), GIAC Certified Systems and Network Auditor (GSNA), GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH). He is the proud father of two daughters, and currently resides in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
