Suspected Grand Theft Auto 6 hacker arrested by UK police

Olivia Powell | 09/27/2022

The person responsible for hacking into Rockstar Games, leaking gameplay and clips from the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 game, has been potentially identified and arrested by London police.

The hacker, known as teapottuberhacker, was also allegedly responsible for an attack into rideshare platform Uber earlier this month, which saw the hacker take control of Uber’s systems and post a graphic image on the company’s internal sites. They are also said to be a member of notorious hacking group, Lapsus$, who have been responsible for data breaches in a number of companies including Microsoft and RobinHood.

The City of London Police announced in a tweet on September 23, 2022 that they had “arrested a 17 year-old in Oxfordshire on suspicion of hacking”. The investigation and arrest were supported by the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU).

In a follow-up statement on September 24, the City of London police confirmed that the teenager, referred to as AK due to him being a minor, had been charged.

Detective inspector Michael O’Sullivan of the City of London Police’s Cyber Crime Unit, said: “The teenager has been charged with two counts of breach of bail conditions and two counts of computer misuse.”

The hacker was due to appear at Highbury Corner Youth Court on 24 September, but as of writing there has been no further updates on the case.

While it was not confirmed by the City of London police that AK was arrested in connection with the Rockstar Games and Uber hacks, journalist Matthew Keys claimed in a tweet that a “source” stated the arrest was related to said hacks.

In a follow-up tweet he further claimed he had “confirmed the 17-year-old arrested in Oxfordshire for the cyber-attack on Rockstar Games and Uber is the same teenager who was arrested earlier this year for hacking Microsoft and Nvidia” and that “additional arrests [were] expected” in relation to the hacks.
